HERC BOOK | ||

Jason,
Stick $13.00 in an envelope & send it to Lars Olausson, Box 142, S-530 32, Satenas, Sweden. He'll send you a book with the history of every Herc ever built. Every Herc enthusiast's bible. As to your question, 63-7865 was delivered to TAC on 4/64 (464 TCW, Pope AFB). From there, it went to 50 TAS, 21 TAS, 374 TAW, 345 TAS, 36 TAS &, as I guess you know, is now with the 374 AW. In 1972, the airplane was awarded the Purple Heart. Hope this helps. |

I don't know the entire history but a tid bit of info for your files.
1 July 1974 7865 was at Kadena and scheduled for a local...mission was cancelled due to fuel leaking from wing leading edge. 29 July 1974 I was the FE, Clo Duval was the pilot. We flew 7865 from Kadena to Yakota. 1Aug 1974 took it out to Iwo Jima and back to Yokota. 2 Aug 1974 went from Yokota to Marcus Island and back to Yokota. 3 Aug 1974 flew back to Kadena from Yakota. Total of 21 flying hours in three days and no maint problems noted in my log book. Muff Muff Where have you been, I've e mailed you and they all bounce back? Drop me a note. Re: 7865

No He can't take a check as the bank charge is $15 for a foreign check. Also toss in $14 Total and he'll airmail it. Worth the buck. I have sent cash there many times before and no problem

Worked and flew on it at Pope

63-7865 was delivered to the 464th TCW at Pope right after I got there in December 1963. A year or so later it was one of several brand-new Es from Pope that were traded to the Dyess wing for their older 62 models. Lars shows it as being at Dyess in July 64 but I think that is too early.
I don't know where this "awarded Purple Heart" stuff come from since I never saw a purple heart painted on any of the As and Bs and they were all shot up. It must have been a CCK thing. The date is given as May 1, 1972 which would have been during the siege of An Loc. Sam McGowan Author "The Cave", A novel of the Vietnam War |

I was a loadmaster in the 772 in 67 and we got "Wounded Herky" certificates. Herky with a crutch under the wing. That was B models. I don't remember if the source was Lockheed or local.

I flew this bird out of kontum on three engines, made it as far as pleiku. There was a purple heart plaque above the engineer's panel, but it was stolen while the bird was at yakota.

The plaque is rightfully back where it belongs, with the aircraft. It is now at Ramstein AB, Germany. All you old herk guys should know that the aircraft is in excellent condition and is one of the best looking aircraft we have here. It was recently Refurbed and personnel here take alot of pride and are very enthusiastic about the aircraft being here. It has been given to a crew chief who in my mind will take care of her and not let her history be forgotten.

I have a copy of the newspaper article about 7865 at Kontum, From the CCK Base paper.
It tells the story and lists the AC as Lt Col Reed Mulkey, and the two crew chiefs as Sgt Jerry McClellan, and A1C Ronald Laboard. If you want a copy send me your snail mail address. Bob |

I had four plaques made up at CCK. They had the Purple Heart and a brief summary of the rocket attack damage incurred on 26 April 1972 and subsequent damage received on 1 May 1972 from another rocket attack. I was the pilot that took it in to Kontum and the pilot that brought it out on three engines. I have one of the plaques, I gave one to Jerry McClellan and one to Ron Laboard. The fourth was riveted to the engineer's overhead panel.

Do you have a nice digital pic of your plaque to share? What did you do in the "Dozen" while waiting for the work to be done on the plaques?

Reed,
It is a pleasure to hear from you regarding this. I was stationed at Yokota and had the plesure of working on this fine aircraft. Every time I would go out to it I would get chills thinking about what this aircraft went through. I can not imagine what it was like during that time and am in aww of the people that flew that aircraft after all that. Needless to say, I am in Flight Engineer school right now and just found out that I am going to be stationed back at Yokota, too bad 7865 is in Germany now, I would love to fly on that aircraft again...it is truly blessed. I am looking forward to going back to Japan and flying there again. Thanks, Brandon |
